Unicorno Official Art

The Unicornos are a collection of characters from tokidoki who are a combination of the concept of unicorns and pegasi. It is by far tokidoki's most popular collection. They were first featured on April 22, 2011. The most featured character from the series is Stellina, who first appeared in Series 1, simply titled Unicorno. Stellina is also one of the original tokidoki characters, appearing in art since the beginning of the brand. As of 2023, there are 12 main Unicorno series, as well as minor series and a spin off collection titled Mermicorno. There are also several keychains, plushies, larger figures, and limited edition Unicornos.

Site and Box Description[]

The Unicornos were once simple little ponies that were out trotting and wandered into a magic waterfall. Passing through the waterfall, the ponies transformed into unicorns and found a hidden magical kingdom. The Unicornos live between the magic kingdom and our world.

Unicorn History[]

The origin of the unicorn comes from the Indus Valley civilization, where it was originally more cow-like, and made its way to Europe through a Greek writer named Ctesias in 5th century BC. It was depicted as being more similar to a wild donkey than a horse for a long time. Despite popular belief, unicorns never actually appear in Greek mythology.

The Unicorn in Captivity

Unicorns were popularized in the Middle Ages when translators misinterpreted the animal known as a re'em mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as a "unicornis", which means one-horned in Latin. A story that unicorns could be captured for medicinal purposes spread throughout Europe, along with the idea that unicorns were linked to Jesus Christ. This connection eventually faded into obscurity among Christians. People during this time period believed that unicorns were real creatures, and they based this belief on the fact that narwhal and rhinoceros horns existed. Unicorn hunts were often depicted in artwork of the Middle Ages, the most famous being The Hunt of the Unicorn, a series of tapestries created from 1495-1505 by Meister der Apokalypsenrose der Sainte Chapelle.

Unicorns came back into the public eye with fantasy books such as Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carrol and The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. In the 1970s and 80s, companies like Lisa Frank and Hasbro started advertising unicorn products for young girls. Nowadays, the unicorn can be associated with youth and magic as opposed to its more serious origins. Modern day unicorns are usually depicted as majestic white horses with long, spiraling horns. Most have magical powers that can be channeled through their horns at will.

Pegasus History[]

Pegasus was the name of a winged horse in Greek mythology. He was the son of Poseidon and Medusa, and was born from her severed head along with his human brother, Chrysaor. He ascended to Mount Olympus shortly after his birth and worked as an assistant to Zeus, king of the gods. He was individually tamed by the heroes Perseus and Bellerophon for short periods of time. After Perseus decapitated Medusa, he rode Pegasus to Ethiopia where he met and rescued his wife, Andromeda. Bellerophon captured and rode Pegasus when he slayed the Chimera, but went mad with power and tried to ascend to Olympus while on Pegasus' back. Zeus hit Bellerophon with a bolt of lightning, and he died while falling back to Earth.

The word pegasus has come to refer to any winged horse, and, similarly to the unicorn, is a popular figure in fantasy media. In some cases, such as My Little Pony, it has combined with the unicorn to create a horse with wings and a horn. This creature is commonly referred to as a pegacorn or alicorn, which is traditionally the name for the unicorn horn itself.

Base Design[]

DIY Unicorno

Each Unicorno has a different theme, but each has a base design which can vary depending on the Unicorno. The overall body is similar to that of a horse's, with a head, a body, and four legs. They usually have large black eyes with no pupils. Simone Legno is known for giving female characters a single eyelash, while male characters have none, so it is usually assumed that Unicornos who have an eyelash drawn are female. They have pointed ears, similar to a horse's, and a mane that is split into four sections. The first section, which is at the front of the head, is the largest and has a pointed unicorn horn at the front. The mane is usually multicolored, either with an alternating pattern or with all four sections being different colors.

A common theme with Unicornos is that they have the tokidoki logo on their chest, but some have a design that goes with the rest of their theme instead. If a Unicorno has a yellow star on their chest instead of a tokidoki logo, then that means they are from Neon Star, a different toy line under the tokidoki brand name. Around the area where their neck meets their back are two pegasus wings. They have a small dent on the outside of the wings, and two on the bottoms of the wings. Each has a section at the bottom of each leg which are supposed to represent hooves. Hooves are usually all one color, four different colors, or two different colors(ie. color one on the front left and hind right hooves, and color two on the front right and hind left hooves). They have a tail that is usually a solid color and one of the colors on the mane. Each has a copyright line imprinted on their underbelly.

Trivia[]

The Unicorno concept was started a long time ago, beginning with the character Stellina, and it wasn't until 2011 that the first series came out. Each series since then has come in a blind box with a blind bag inside, as well as a collector's guide pamphlet and one on the side of the box. There is different box art for each series, although the description always remains the same. The number of Unicornos in each series has varied throughout the years, but it ranges from 10-12. Some Unicornos do not come in blind boxes, however, and can only be found on the tokidoki website.
